Play and mobility

Matt Jones, designer at Nokia, speaks about the opportunities to design mobile games based on physical activities, motions and mobility.

Because of a technical issue, the sound starts around 13 minutes. Sorry Matt, and sorry to you all for that. That speech - voted one of the top 5 talk at Lift06 - is worth watching even if it is only for the final 10 minutes that have sound!

Speaker Profile: Anab Jain

Originally from India, Anab Jain is a London-based interaction designer with skills and experience in technology foresight, service design, people-centred research and filmmaking. Her work is about people and everyday life today by informed visions and design, but also about how to best design for an uncertain future in a complex world. Until recently she was design lead on a project at Microsoft Research Cambridge, which attempted to rethink notions of machine intelligence by developing product and service scenarios around biotechnology and RFID. Currently she works as a service and interaction designer at Nokia Design in London, while developing her emerging design practice ‘Superflux’. Her work has received international awards including the UNESCO Digital Arts Award, Design for our Future Selves Award and Award of Excellence, ICSID and DuPont Inc and has been shown at Mattel Toys, Apple and Intel headquarters.

She looks at LIFT as a convergence of ideas and interesting people. It is a platform for conversations and debates, a space for sharing and reflecting on our own current practices and where they intersect with other disciplines. She says “Within the context of the larger world ‘economic and environmental’ crisis that we find ourselves in, the theme of this year’s LIFT is very timely. I am hoping that it becomes a platform for not only discussing ideas around alternative, sustainable ways of building our futures, but also an opportunity to find collaborators and initiate projects that could influence collective change.”

Younghee Jung Moves to London

Younghee Jung, Senior Design Manager at Nokia, recently moved to London from Tokyo. Learn more about Younghee's groundbreaking work by viewing her LIFT08 video.

Many will remember her presentation in the User Experience Track where she shared research performed in shanty towns around the world. The purpose was to capture input from users with a view to analyzing trends for future development.

Younghee's well-known colleague and Principal Researcher at Nokia, Jan Chipchase, will be attending LIFT08 in Korea. We'll be back with more about Jan's contribution soon.

LIFTed: Gratefully whirling down again

One of the presentations at LIFT08 that hit me the most was this presentation by Younghee Jung at Nokia about Nokia Open Studio. The great thing about the outcomes of her project were that you could really see local culture reflected in the designs that were posted by local communities. Local challenges like weather, criminality or lack of money found their way in design features of the phones.

This keynote offered me great insight in the importance of getting in touch with communities. From a crowdsourcing perspective I am highly interested in what the implications would be when taking this online. Culture on the internet might be not that diversified as the cases in Open Studio, but when approaching communities online, culture will definitely be important.

Thanks to Younghee and many others who really LIFTed me. I am gratefully whirling down again, looking back at a great experience.

Speaker Profile: Francesco Cara

Why we invited Francesco to LIFT
Francesco is in charge of the development of design strategy at Nokia. He has a really exciting job. His work combines analysis: of evolutions in the way people communicate, enjoy and work, of innovations in design, technology and business models; and intuition to draw inspiring, new directions for design. This viewpoint is very valuable and relevant to LIFT08.

What will Francesco talk about
Francesco has written about the adoption and use of digital technologies, communication, automation and user-centered design. In this context he will present important future trends to us.

See Francesco's LIFT Profile to learn more about her enlightening work.
