What can the future do for you?
Lift works to identify and anticipate current and emerging usagesof digital technologies through research, events, publications and services.
Biophilia - Björk's app-based music album - is a curious experience. Among the different app, the one that caught my eyes is certainly "Crystalline" (which corresponds to the first single off the new album) made by Scott Snibbe.
From a musical standpoint, the song is played with Gameleste, an iPad-controllable mix of Gamelan Celeste hybrid that makes sweet xylophone organ box sounds. On top of which she sings the following lyrics:
"underneath our feet, crystals growing like plants/ listen how they grow/ I’m blinded by the light/ listen how they grow/ in the core of the earth/ listen how they grow/ crystalline internal nebula/ crystalline/ rocks growing slow more/ crystalline/ I conquer claustrophobia/ crystalline/ and demand the light."
Now, about the app, it's a bit like a REZ/Katamari Damacy cross-over. It's basically like a rail shooter except that you don't kill targeted enemies. Instead, your avatar, a tiny crystal, travel along a predetermined path through mines in which you can collect other kinds of crystal. You just have to tilt the iOS device to catch them:
By aggregating new material, basically unlock new colorful tunnels in which you can progress. Each of them correspond to different music modules. The result is a quite immersive experience that allow listeners to discover their own music arrangements.
As discussed on evolver.fm:
Jean-Henry Morin - associate professor at the University of Geneva - is one of our trusted sources on issues like privacy and DRM. He writes today on France's "Music Card", a subsidy that lets French residents between the ages of 12 and 25 purchase a 50 euro ($70) Music Card for only 25 euros with the state paying the remaining 25 euros.
France has just released its order behind the “music card” as the public policy to accompany the so called “legal offering measures” for its three strikes approach to copyright infringement (HADOPI).
In a nutshell, I was deeply shocked by its implementation details. Not that I actually expected much out of it (Hey, it’s HADOPI related !), but sometimes you think / hope things can’t fail 100% of the time. Well, I hate to say but it’s actually much much worse than I expected (i.e., really ugly)
Basically I have three major point :
At the end of the day, there goes 50 M€ of public money down the drain through a public policy generating potential discrimination, exclusion and inequality. What a mess ! Adding up the public money spend through the years with DADVSI, HADOPI and this latest joke / waste of public policy, I just cannot refrain thinking it would have been much better spent educating our kids at school on these issue and others related to living in the Digital Age ! This has become as important as learning to read, write and count.

Hello,
I wanted to thank all people that participated to the LIFT SONG activity.
It was definitely not an easy one and some people really got into it, wrote creative lyrics and performed in front of everyone.
That experience was an attempt to show that in the end what matters is our humanity and singing is definitely a way to deeply express it.
We will post on the website the best tracks for you to listen to.
Thanks and drop a line if you found the concept interesting,
Lucas Grolleau

Man, I enjoyed Lift. Sure there were some things I didn't like but overwhelmingly there was lots that I did. And yes, Laurent, I have filled the feedback survey in (mine's the one that asks for beer)
By far the worst thing of all was being at another conference where Pedro was in the same room and yet again we managed not to arrange to meet. Hmmm. That is poor.
Anyway, I've managed to post a few of my impressions over on my blog and I'm sure more will be forthcoming.
But to conclude I wanted to share something random with you all. Don't ask me why...it is random and I know not why. That 'thing' is the content of my *Lift* playlist on my iPhone. I intended to listen to this in the downtime between sessions, on the plane etc but because Lift was so damned good, so damned engaging, *none* of it got played.
But I have to share it. I'm an OCD kind of guy, so you'll notice that this all made up of albums and not random individual tracks.
The Killers - Sawdust
Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
The Beta Band - The Three EP's
The Lemonheads - It's a shame about Ray
Midlake - Milkmaid Grand Army EP
Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther
Turin Brakes - Dark on Fire
Radio One's Live Lounge Volume 1
Captain - This is Hazelville
The Charlatans - The Charlatans
Clinic - Walking with Thee
Paul Oakenfold - Greatest Hits and Remixes.
That's 201 tracks and 14.6 Hours of tunes that didn't get listened to...if you are remotely intrigued by any of this I recommend you try out Roscoe by Midlake (Trials of Van Occupanther).

LIFT SONG
A project from LIFT Experience
The idea is simple: every attendee lifted by the conference atmosphere and drive will have to imagine brief lyrics to the LIFT 08 soundtrack. At the LIFT SONG recording booth in the activity room, you will record your own voice/song/lyrics/ guitar track over the LIFT 08 soundtrack track in a 20 seconds mp3 format, it will then be sent to you by email maybe even available on the website. The whole process should take less than 3 minutes per person.
After receiving your track it is highly recommended you use and abuse your LIFT SONG during the conference, for instance using it as a ringtone, blog post, computer noise, whistle-a-long, klaxon melody, live cover at the local pub, air guitar, etc.
Participants will automatically be selected for the 2008 LIFT SONG CONTEST who’s price will be awarded at the end of the conference.
So don’t be shy, give it a try! It is your once in lifetime chance to become a no hit wonder.
