Qasim Virjee is the Principal of 'Design Guru' - a Toronto-based web production firm concerned with building online spaces for communication that support communities whilst being easy to maintain and develop through time.
Specialized in a variety of Open Source Software, Qasim's particular focus with Design Guru is in using Joomla and Drupal - two Content Management Systems that go beyond simply organizing articles - instead acting as Application Toolkits that can facilitate online social networking and advanced data handling.
His experience in cutting edge technology yet high value for innovatively intuitive aesthetics has resulted in working with an international array of organizations across fashion, media, high-tech, non-profit, political, service and other sectors; including the California Institute of Arts, women's haute couture label JUMA, NYC non-profits the Project for Public Spaces and Echoing Green, the Liberal Party of Canada, among others.
Passionate about the development of web technologies, Qasim is responsible for launching Design Guru's 'Joomlasphere Network' – a cluster of bespoke Joomla community-support tools. In early 2007 he was invited to be a member of the official Joomla Marketing Workgroup.
In addition to his work with Design Guru, Qasim is an audio-visual artist (aka. Abdul Smooth) and owns/runs Indian Electronica, the Toronto, Canada based record label, online community, radio station and music festival (with events spanning 3 continents annually.)
