Lift12 speaker profile: Steve Song

In the run up to Lift12 we'll be profiling our speakers to give you a preview of what to expect at this year's conference. Have a look at the program sessions here and grab your ticket here.

Steve Song is the founder of the Village Telco, a social enterprise that aims to make starting a telephone company as easy as starting a blog. The Village Telco was first developed during Steve's three-year fellowship at the Shuttleworth Foundation in South Africa.

Steve is passionate about driving down the cost of communication access in Africa. He believes that access to decent education and affordable communication infrastructure will unleash innovation and opportunities on the continent. He blogs at http://manypossibilities.net.

Most recently the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States and the European Union’s CE standard approved the "Mesh Potato" system. The Mesh Potato combines the features of an 802.11bg WiFi router with an Analog telephone Adaptor (ATA) and automatically configures itself to build a mesh Wifi network.

Read about another current project that aims to set up a Mesh Potato network at Afrikaburn.

We look forward to hear more about Village Telco in Steve's speech during the session Technology and/in Crisis at Lift12.
