What can the future do for you?
Lift works to identify and anticipate current and emerging usagesof digital technologies through research, events, publications and services.
The net has already transformed creative and collaborative work beyond recognition. The next few years will see huge leaps in the power and sophistication of net based tools. Artists, sculptors, writers, movie makers have all had their lives and their ways of working changed completely. They can create using new tools, collaborate with others, and engage with their audiences and markets in totally new ways.
Music is different. The model for music online is just like that of the 1950's record store, except for the change from physical to virtual. One of the reasons is that the music industry has managed to keep control of the creative end of music and so been able to maintain the same producer-consumer relationship. They produce the music. You buy what they produce.
New tools, new technologies, and new licensing models are starting to have an impact on the way music is created. Many of these innovations will also affect the way that other creative people such as writers and photographers work.
The workshop will cover these main topics:
1. New creative and collaborative models for music;
2. What innovations will be needed to support those models;
3. The novel business models that will become possible as a result.
Structure:
Part 1: brief presentations on changes and innovations in creative work using the net.
Part 2: discussion of new, technologies, collaborative structures, and business models.
Selected participants will be given the opportunity during the first part of the workshop to present key ideas for discussion during the second part.
