How do we use technology to record, collect, compose, structure, repossess, share, and eternalitze experiences? How can they become part of (our) memory?

One of the few, best conventional techniques and media to keep memories and to share experiences is in text and writing. Bills, diaries, letters: history starts with written records. Unfortunately it takes considerable skill and time to write, and even then we might end up pretty much lost when we try to repossess and share our memories later. Photography seems to sit in an entirely different sweet spot of skill, effort, and the value it brings back and communicates. It looks like this is the way that most people prefer to build and keep memories – you press the button – simple. Our question for this workshop is: what is the best we can do now and how can we do better, exploring technological opportunities and social consequences.

The workshop by Andreas Simon and Flavia Caviezel (IDK at FHNW/HGK Basel) will introduce some concepts and examples of experience capture technologies and methods, from biofeedback to panoramic video, and engage participants in brainstorming and team discussions. This could be a BoF, but we’ll see how this is coming along as a workshop.

Workshop structure:

Group presentations, Q&A
