Data met journalism in mid-2010, when developers and journalists got together to explore new ways to analyze and visualize information. One year on, what has datajournalism achieved?

Most newsrooms are now aware of the term and want to allocate part of their resources to this new field. Training classes appeared and several specialized agencies were created throughout Europe. However, most people still confuse the concept with animated infographics.

Visualization is an important part of data-driven journalism, but it comes after data collection and analysis. Without these first two steps, the current hype will fall flat as decision-makers fail to see the return on investment. There’s a lot of value to be unlocked in data collection and analysis. Data visualization is only the last step in the value-creation chain.
